Shikakai is mixed with water and then put into the hair. It lathers moderately although does not produce the amount of lather that a regular shampoo does. It has a natural low pH, so it is extremely mild, and doesn't strip hair of natural oils. Usually no rinse or conditioner is used since shikakai also acts as a detangler.
